Solar Control  »  Shading

Savings

Shading represents one of the low hanging fruits of energy efficiency. Appropriate shading of fenestrations reduce as much as 90% of unwanted heat gains and saves space cooling energy up to 30%. However, it must be ensured that shading does not result in the increase of space heating loads due to reduction in direct solar insolation in winter months. In addition, shading should be balanced with required daylight in the space and should not result in glare. A study by Laband & Pandit (2010) shows that shade generating trees in the sub urban environment in Alabama save the home owner on an average of 9.3% in electricity cots in summer months. Bellia, De Falco, & Minichiello (2013) observed that appropriate shading devices are able to save global annual energy in the range of 8% to 20% in different Italian Climates.
