Codes & Standards

The following standards and building codes provide specifications and requirements of building air tightness and procedures to calculate air leakage rates in building envelope.

Country Standard Remarks
Germany Passivhaus Standard - PHI-1999/6 - Airtight Design: A Planning Aid for Passive Houses Literature on thermal bridges and resources for thermal bridge free construction
International ISO 9972:2015 - Thermal performance of buildings -- Determination of air permeability of buildings -- Fan pressurization method Provides standardised testing protocol to test air leakage rates through a building envelope under controlled pressurization and de-pressurization
UK CIBSE Guide F: Energy Efficiency in Buildings Holistic guide on energy efficiency in buildings with information on air tightness
USA ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2013 - Energy Standard for Bui dings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings Provides requirement for air tightness of buildings (among other key indicators that effects energy efficiency in buildings)
USA California Energy Commission – 2008 Building Energy Efficiency Standards for Residential and Non-residential Buildings. (The new 2013 Standards will go into effect on July 1, 2014) Provides requirement for air tightness of buildings (among other key indicators that effects energy efficiency in buildings)
USA ASTM E779 – 10: Standard Test Method for Determining Air Leakage Rate by Fan Pressurization Provides standardised testing protocol to test air leakage rates through a building envelope under controlled pressurization and de-pressurization
